About Us
Aiming at producing highly qualified experts in the field of health and sports science
Today, with the development of accessible transportation, the spread of a Western-style
diet and the aging of society, it is no exaggeration to say that people cannot maintain their health unless they
willingly engage in physical exercise and improve dietary habits.
In Japan, however, while people’s awareness and expectation regarding health and physical activity are on the
rise, sufficient systems and an appropriate environment for the effective education of health and sports are not
yet in place, and also the development of human resources to support these systems has not kept pace. Experts in
the field of health and sports committed to improving and enhancing quality of life are increasingly sought after.
In order to foster such specialists, the Faculty of Health and Sports Science offers programs in three main
academic fields, which equip students with specialized knowledge and skills from diversified perspectives. In the
field of Health Science, students learn the significance of sports-related health promotion through the study of
health and prevention medicines. In the field of Training Science, students learn methods for improving sports
performance, as well as ways to help people develop a habit of lifelong sports participation. In the field of
Sports Management, students learn methods for improving and enriching the social environment surrounding sports,
as well as sports-related business and management.
Also, taking advantage of Doshisha’s strength as a ‘comprehensive university’, the Faculty has been positively
collaborating with other faculties of the university to provide students with an opportunity to study a wide range
of topics-including medical care, physics, psychology, management and policy-allowing them to develop a
multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach.
Moreover, through collaboration with various research and medical organizations inside and outside the university,
the Faculty aims to nurture individuals who can propose a health and sports education system that goes beyond
‘sports science’ in terms of merely acquiring sports skills to include ‘health promotion’ and ‘creation of
motivation in life’ as well as a method for enriching the sports environment from a new and creative perspective.
Human Resource Development Objectives
The Faculty of Health and Sports Science aims to develop individuals equipped with a comprehensive and systematic knowledge and theory of health and sports science encompassing cutting-edge information and theories regarding health and sports activities and the social situations surrounding them. The Faculty prepares the students to be active and competent professionals who are able to contribute to the maintenance and promotion of people’s health, as well as the social development of sports, in various settings including the general community and social agencies, sports-related and healthcare industries, and schools.

Characteristics of the Faculty of Health and Sports Science
1. A flexible curriculum system and three curriculum models
Health and Sports Science is an applied science integrating the humanities and sciences, which covers fields
ranging from preventive medicine to sports coaching methods, and from public administration to social studies.
Therefore, a free curriculum system has been implemented in which students can choose subjects in diverse though
related fields according to their interests and needs.
However, to avoid the possibility of incoherence in the curriculum design, the Faculty presents three curriculum
models-Health Science, Training Science, and Sports Management-helping students to engage in a well-organized and
systematic study of their specialized subjects as well as the study of related and adjacent subjects tailored to
their academic objectives and future career goals.
2. ‘First Year Seminar’ and practice-based education in small groups
To enhance the efficiency of learning, the Faculty limits the maximum number of registered credits to 44 in the
first and second years, and offers seminars in small groups given by full-time faculty members in the first
semester of the first year, and in the two full semesters of the third and fourth years. This means that students
are able to attend small-group seminar-style classes in five out of eight semesters over four years. ‘First Year
Seminar’is taken in the first semester, with ‘PracticeⅠto Ⅳ’ in the fifth to eighth semesters. These seminar-style
classes allow students to experience close interaction with faculty in their chosen fields, and receive detailed
and individualized instruction so that they can deepen their learning in an efficient and stepwise manner
throughout their four years at university.
3. Acquisition of a range of experimental and practical skills through basic practical
training
Health and Sports Science is a discipline that integrates the humanities and sciences. Thus, students are required
to acquire laboratory and practical skills crucial to both natural science and social science. Students without
the knowledge of laboratory and measurement methods necessary for the study of natural science, or those without
the knowledge of investigative methods for the study of social science, are not considered eligible to acquire a
B.A. degree in Health and Sports Science. In consideration of this, the Faculty offers the Basic Practice course
to equip students with a range of laboratory and practical skills.
4. Diverse and integrated curriculum design through collaboration with other faculties
The Faculty of Health and Sports Science shares some specialized subjects with the Faculty of Life and Medical
Sciences to enrich the curriculum related to medicine and health science, and also offers some related subjects in
the Faculty of Psychology and other faculties (Social Welfare, etc.), capitalizing on the merit of a comprehensive
university, so that the diversity and the integration of the curriculum can be ensured.
